Teeth Whitening
What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a process that uses a peroxide-based bleaching agent to help your teeth achieve the bright and brilliant shine you’ve always wanted. With both in-office and at-home treatments available, you have a wealth of options to choose from, and Dr. Rhoads can help you decide which one is right for you. Zoom is highly recommended for teeth whitening due to its combination of convenience and effectiveness.
How does teeth whitening work?
Both in-office and at-home treatments begin with applying the bleaching agent to your teeth. The bleaching agent used in an at-home treatment is typically weaker than the one used by Dr. Rhoads, usually somewhere between 3% and 15% peroxide as opposed to the range of 20% to 40% found in in-office treatments. As a general rule, the more peroxide the bleaching agent contains, the greater its whitening power. However, these more powerful bleaches can harm the teeth if applied for too long, so they are best if used under the supervision of a doctor.
Dr. Rhoads applies the bleaching agent either directly to the teeth or into a bleach tray that you’ll wear. He often uses light or heat to increase the effectiveness of the bleaching agent. Depending on the type of whitening you’ve chosen, you may be done in one visit of one to two hours, or you may have your treatment in several shorter visits. The Zoom system that Dr. Rhoads recommends is typically done in just one visit.
